(Saturday, October 13, 2001) This is the stump of the tree which started the fire. The trunk is lying behind. You can see the cliff which boxed the fire in on one end. The burnt out stump was huge. I'd estimate it to be about 10 feet in diameter. You can see how it's all burnt out on the inside. There was still smoke coming from the ash in the center of the stump. The crown of the tree, in the corner of the rock face was actually still burning. I could see some decent sized flames from my vantage points. The Forest Service knew about the fire, and as per the new management plan, they were letting it burn. It didn't look like it would get out of control. It appeared to have pretty much burned itself out. Since there is so much rock, the fire didn't have many options to spread.
